What is Morris Dancing?

Morris dancing is a type of English folk dancing originating in the 14th century. It is most typically danced in sets of six or eight people with props such as sticks, hankies bells and flowery hats to give flourish to the dance.

There are a number of styles of Morris, with the most well-known being the Cotswold, Border, or North-West styles.

Dancing at Preston Market. The dancers all have one leg bent, in the air.
Dancers holding hands and long wooden sticks turn around in front of an old brick building with a bright sky above.

Who are we?

The Britannia Morris formed in Melbourne in 1979 and became a mixed side in 2018.

We dance the Cotswold style of Morris, primarily in the Melbourne-developed tradition of Kellybrook Stout Matron. We also practice dances from several other traditions including Adderbury, Bledington and Badby.

We dance at festivals and events all around Melbourne and Victoria, and interstate as often as possible. Our regular gigs include the Maldon Folk Festival, Swan Hill Food and Wine Festival, and the Highland Games in Croydon. You’ll also see us dancing out at Preston and other markets.

The dancers of the side are supported, in no small part, by our wonderful musicians. We always have and always will dance to live music.

We practice weekly on Fridays at 7:30pm at 25 Townhall Avenue, Preston and will often head to a local pub afterwards for a nightcap.
